A 33-year-old woman with schizophrenia was admitted to hospital after swallowing a metal knife. She had a long history of similar episodes. She complained of abdominal pain, and on examination a tender mass was palpable in the left upper quadrant. At laparotomy the stomach was full of foreign bodies, which were removed.
