This condition, first described by Kelynack in 18931, is appendiceal diverticulosis. It is best managed by surgical resection due to the risk of appendicitis (which has a higher rate of perforation, occurring in 66 per cent of cases, and 30-fold increased mortality2) in the presence of appendiceal diverticula. Furthermore, 48 per cent of appendicectomy specimens with appendiceal diverticula harbour an appendiceal neoplasm3, therefore resection and careful histological analysis is warranted.
