The patient had no previous medical history; preoperative blood tests were all normal except for a borderline
low platelet count. At operation, the hernia sac was found to contain an umbilical varix. The varix was ligated and the
abdominal wall defect closed with polypropylene sutures. After surgery, CT of the abdomen and pelvis showed
hypersplenism and oesophageal varices. Umbilical varices are usually associated with advanced liver disease.
