This image illustrates a congenital urinary abnormality: duplication of the right ureter. This was found during surgery for colonic cancer. Ureteral duplication is the most common congenital urological abnormality, occurring in approximately 1 per cent of the population and in 10 per cent of children with urinary tract infections. Surgeons performing pelvic procedures should be aware of such congenital abnormalities.
