This was a right femoral hernia containing the vermiform appendix. This type of hernia is named after Rene-Jacques Croissant de Garengeot (1688-1759), a Parisian surgeon who first described this pathology in 1731. De Garengeot hernia is an exceedingly rare phenomenon, with less than 1 per cent of all femoral hernias containing the appendix, and only 0·08–0·13 per cent involving in carcerated acute appendicitis.
