There is a small (5 × 5 mm) bowel performation approximately 5 cm before the ileocaecal valve. The finding is characteristic of an untreated Salmonella typhi infection. Progression of the infection leads to increasing fever, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Finally, small perforations occur, usually in the distal ileum immediately before the ileocaecal valve.
