The man has acute haemorrhagic pancreatitis. He presented with acute onset of severe epigastric pain that spread to the rest of his abdomen, associated with nausea and vomiting. Examination revealed a haemorrhagic area around the flanks (Grey Turner’s sign), and around the umbilicus (Cullen’s sign). These are signs of severe pancreatitis. The patient was resuscitated and treated in intensive care.
