Conclusion

Thirty-two patients were randomly allocated to subtotal parathyroidectomy (SP) or total parathyroidectomy with autotransplantation (TP/AT). Rates of recurrent hyperparathyroidism (SP 24 per cent, TP/AT 13 per cent) and permanent hypoparathyroidism (12 vs. 7 per cent, respectively) were similar. Patients who had SP avoided obligatory postoperative hypoparathyroidism.
