Conclusion

Over one thousand patients were included and followed for a minimum of 2 years (median 34.2 months). There was no difference in median survival between the two regimens: 23.0 months with fluorouracil, 23.6 months with gemcitabine. There were fewer serious side effects with gemcitabine (7.5 vs. 14 per cent, P<0.001).
