Conclusion

This updated meta-analysis included twelve RCTs. Compared with no screening, sigmoidoscopy screening reduced colorectal cancer incidence (relative risk 0.76, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.7 to 0.83) and mortality (0.74, 0.69 to 0.8). Faecal occult blood testing had no effect on colorectal cancer incidence, but reduced colorectal cancer mortality (0.69, 0.56 to 0.86).
