Conclusion

Some 550 patients having gastrectomy for gastric cancer were included. The addition of extensive intraoperative lavage reduced the mortality rate (none versus 1.9 per cent, P=0.02) and perioperative complication rates (11.1 versus 17 per cent, P=0.04).
