Conclusion

Some 1416 patients were enrolled; the rate of conversion to open surgery was 0.9 per cent. The laparoscopic approach reduced complications (13 versus 19.9 per cent, P=0.001), reduced wound complications (3.1 versus 7.7 per cent, P<0.001) and reduced major intra-abdominal complications (7.6 versus 10.3 per cent, P=0.095).
