Conclusion

This study included 1202 patients randomized to one of four groups. Intensive follow-up with CT and regular blood testing for CEA increased the number of patients retreated for recurrence with curative intent. Overall mortality after a mean 4.4 years was similar in the minimum follow-up group (15.9 per cent) compared to all intensive follow-up groups (18.2 per cent).
