Conclusion

Some 127 patients who were moderately or severely malnourished preoperatively were randomly allocated oral nutritional supplement for two weeks before and four weeks after surgery. Total postoperative complication rates were similar (29.2 versus 37.1 per cent in controls, P=0.35), although severe complications were less common in the group given the supplement.
