Conclusion

The study comprised 101 patients undergoing liver resection who were randomly allocated intravenous pentoxifylline starting 12h preoperatively and continuing for 72h. Liver regeneration was improved for small remnant livers (<1.2 per cent remnant:body weight ratio), but not larger ones. Clinical outcomes were similar between the groups.
