Conclusion

Twenty-five trials were included. Enhanced recovery reduced duration of stay by a mean 2.6 days, and overall morbidity (risk ratio 0.66, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.54 to 0.8), but did not affect mortality. There was not sufficient information to conclude which components of enhance recovery were most important.
