Conclusion

A total of 381 patients were included in this study. Time to first flatus and first defaecation were significantly reduced (P<0.05), as was abdominal distension (P<0.01). Hospital stay was shorter in patients who had a bowel resection: 5.1 versus 6.4 days, P<0.023.
