Conclusion

A total of 179 patients were included. The intensive insulin regimen reduced mean glucose from 9.9 to 5.5 mmol/L. There was no effect on perioperative mortality (4.3 vs. 5.7 per cent in controls), but intensive insulin reduced the rate of complications (7.6 vs. 18.4 per cent) and shortened hospital stay.
