Conclusion

This part of the trial was stopped early after 90 patients had been randomized after an increased event rate in the lavage group. The primary endpoint was a composite of major morbidity or mortality within twelve months, and was reached by 30 (67 per cent) of lavage patients and 24 (60 per cent) after sigmoidectomy.
