Conclusion

Some 2539 diabetic patients without previous vascular disease were followed for a median of 10.3 years. Aspirin did not reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications (hazard ratio 1.04, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.83 to 1.3), but did increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding (2 versus 0.9 per cent, P=0.03).
