Conclusion

Median follow-up in this trial that enrolled 340 patients was 143 months. Overall 10-year survival rates were similar: 74.1 per cent open and 76.8 per cent laparoscopic surgery (P=0.44). Local recurrence rates were lower after laparoscopic surgery (3.4 versus 8.9 per cent; P=0.05), but disease-free survival rates were similar.
