Conclusion

Six trials including 626 patients were included. Laparoscopic lavage was associated with higher rates of major complications (relative risk 1.68, 95 per cent confidence interval 1.1 to 2.56). Complication rates were similar after Hartmann’s procedure and primary resection with anastomosis, but patients who had the latter procedure were more likely to be stoma-free after one year.
