Conclusion

This 2x2 factorial trial that included 5177 patients concluded that neither five days of oral acetylcysteine (4.6 per cent) nor intravenous sodium bicarbonate (4.4 per cent) reduced acute kidney injury compared to standard hydration with 0.9 per cent sodium chloride alone (4.7 per cent).
