Conclusion

Thirty-day stroke and/or death rates were higher after stenting than surgery for both symptomatic (odds ratio 1.71, 95 per cent confidence interval1.38 to 2.11) and asymptomatic (1.64, 1.02 to 2.64) carotid disease. Late ipsilateral stroke rates were similar.
