Conclusion

Perioperative feeding with synbiotics was compared with postoperative enteral feeding alone in a study of 101 procedures. Preoperative synbiotics appeared to improve immune function, and significantly reduced the rate of postoperative infectious complications from 30 to 12.1 per cent (P<0.05).
