Conclusion

This study included 1159 patients with malignancy having a port inserted for chemotherapy. Open catheter placement was associated with lower rates of pneumothorax and haemothorax (odds ratio 0.27, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.09 to 0.88, P=0.029). Percutaneous insertion was quicker. Success rates and 30 day mortality were similar.
