Conclusion

Of 366 patients initially included, 78 were still symptomatic after treatment with omeprazole, and were randomized to surgery, or continued medicine. After one year, treatment success was greater after surgery (67 per cent) than active medical treatment (28 per cent, P=0.07), or controls continuing omeprazole (12 per cent, P<0.001).
