Conclusion

Some 1067 patients were randomized to routine care or cholecystectomy based on five specific criteria. After 12 months, there was no difference in the proportion who were pain-free between the groups (P=0.32). There were fewer cholecystectomies done in the restricted care group: 68 versus 75 per cent, P=0.01. There was no difference in the rate of gallstone-related complications.
