Conclusion

The trial was stopped early after 109 patients because of difficulties in recruitment. Some 15 per cent of surgical patients had an anastomotic leak; 23 per cent of conservatively treated patients eventually had surgery. Overall major complications were similar between the groups. At six months, quality of life was better after surgery (P<0.0001).
