Conclusion

There were 17 RCTs and seven observational studies. Only the use of closed incision negative pressure wound therapy (odds ratio 0.34, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.23 to 0.51, P<0.001) and use of subcuticular sutures (0.33, 0.17 to 0.65, P=0.001) reduced infection rates. Local antibiotics, drains and other dressings had no effect.
