A two stage method for treating low rectal cancer that avoided ileostomy was compared to standard coloanal anastomosis in 92 patients. Overall 30 day complication rates were similar 35 per cent two stage, 46 per cent standard procedure; P=0.4. Seven patients in the standard procedure group (15 per cent) did not subsequently have ileostomy closure.
