Conclusion

A total of 189 patients were randomized to preconditioning, sham or control groups. The rate of new diffusion-weighted brain lesions on MRI after carotid stenting was lowest after preconditioning (15.9 per cent) compared to sham (36.5 per cent) and control groups (41.3 per cent); both P<0.01. Clinical adverse outcomes were rare, and equally distributed.
