Conclusion

Reoperation within three years for small bowel obstruction was more common in patients who did not have mesenteric closure (hazard ratio 0.56, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.41 to 0.76, P=0.0002) in this study that included 2507 procedures. Mesenteric closure was, however, associated with more postoperative complications: 4.3 vs. 2.8 per cent, P=0.044.
