Conclusion

The trial was stopped early after 1453 patients were randomized due to slow enrolment. The risk of stroke/death or myocardial infarction within 30 days, and ipsilateral stroke within one year was 3.8 per cent with stenting and 3.4 per cent with surgery (P=0.01 for non-inferiority).
