Conclusion

The recurrence rate was lowest after total thyroidectomy: 0.6 per cent versus 2.8 per cent after the Dunhill procedure and 8 per cent after subtotal thyroidectomy. Respective permanent morbidity rates were 2.8, 4.0 and 5.7 per cent.
