Conclusion

In this study that included 291 patients, routine administration of alfacalcidol reduced the rate of postoperative hypocalcaemia after 48h (6 versus 14 per cent, P=n.s.), and also the rate of permanent hypocalcaemia at 6 months (none versus 4 per cent, P=0.04).
