Conclusion
Twenty-three studies were included (only four RCTs), totalling 3242 patients. Total thyroidectomy reduced the recurrence rate (odds ratio 0.1, 95 percent confidence interval 0.06 to 0.18, P<0.00001), but increased both temporary (2.7, 2.04 to 3.56) and permanent (2.91, 1.59 to 5.32) hypoparathyroidism.
