Conclusion

Almost 3000 women with dense breast tissue in at least one quadrant on mammography were included. The addition of ultrasound detected 4.2 extra cancers per 1000 women screened (95 per cent confidence interval 1.1 to 7.2, P=0.003), but at the cost of an increased number of false positive diagnoses.
