Randomised controlled trial of effects of early discharge after surgery for breast cancer. BMJ 1998; 317: 1275-9.

Conclusion

One hundred women were randomized to discharge after 48h with drains in situ, or discharge after drain removal (median 5 days). Three months later women discharged early had greater shoulder movements and less wound pain, without any increase in psychological illness
