Conclusion

Some 3451 women were included in this multicentre study. Intra-operative radiotherapy (IORT) was associated with fewer radiotherapy skin reactions (P=0.03). At median follow-up of 2 years and five months, there were no differences in cancer specific, or overall survival. Five-year local recurrence was higher after IORT: 3.3 versus 1.3 per cent, P=0.042.
