Conclusion

Survival rates after 20 years were similar with, or without radiotherapy in this study that included 381 women. Cumulative probability of first breast cancer event after treatment was lower after radiotherapy (30.9 per cent) than no radiotherapy (45.1 per cent): hazard ratio 0.58, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.41 to 0.82. Most of the benefit occurred in the first five years after treatment.
