Conclusion

Almost 90,000 women aged 40-59 were randomized into this study of screening versus normal care, including physical examination. Cumulative mortality from all breast cancers diagnosed during the study was similar in both groups: hazard ratio 0.99, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.88 to 1.12.
