Conclusion

Sphincterotomy reduced the duration of cholangitis (fever) and reduced hospital stay (median 9 vs. 8 days, p=0.04), but the rate of recurrent cholangitis was similar (13 per cent after sphincterotomy vs. eight per cent in controls) in the 50 patients studied.
