Conclusion

A single perioperative dose of 8mg dexamethasone reduced the rate of surgical site infection from 9.1 to 8.1 per cent (P<0.001) in this study that included 8725 procedures. It also reduced postoperative nausea and vomiting: risk ratio 0.78, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.75 to 0.82.
