Conclusion

A total of 399 hospitalized patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) and at least one adverse risk factor were included; 96.5 per cent of filters were inserted successfully. After three months, recurrent PE occurred in 3 per cent with a filter (all fatal) and 1.5 per cent of controls (2/3 fatal); P=0.50.
