Conclusion

Some 214 patients with pain after cholecystectomy were randomized. A composite outcome (including reduced symptoms and opiate requirement) scored nine and twelve months after treatment was similar between the groups: 37 per cent in the sham treatment group and 23 per cent in the sphincterotomy group improved. Manometry results were not associated with outcome.
