Conclusion

Some 414 patients underwent acute cholecystectomy. Continuation of antibiotics postoperatively for five days did not reduce the rate of postoperative infection: 15 per cent versus 17 per cent in controls. Sixty per cent of operative bile cultures were pathogen-free.
