Conclusion

Data from three large RCTs were pooled. In men, screening reduced the incidence of colorectal cancer after 10.5 to 11.9 years of follow-up: relative risk 0.79, 95 per cent confidence intervals 0.70 to 0.83. Screening also reduced cancers in women under 60 years (0.71, 0.59 to 0.84), but not in those older (0.9, 0.8 to 1.02), due to tumours in the proximal colon.
