Conclusion

A total of 170,034 people were included; 40,621 had sigmoidoscopy. Invitation to screening reduced the risk of developing colorectal cancer by 26 percent (hazard ratio 0.74, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.7 to 0.8, P<0.0001), and death from colorectal cancer by 30 per cent (0.7, 0.62 to 0.79, P<0.0001).
