Conclusion

The study was stopped after 527 procedures for reasons of futility. The rates of any stroke and death after 30 days were 3.9 per cent after surgery and 9.6 per cent after stenting (relative risk 2.5, 95 per cent confidence interval 1.2 to 5.1). After 6 months the rates were 6.1 and 11.7 per cent respectively, P=0.02.
